Fly
2020, IPD527

Fly was a kinetic sculpture made for an industrial design course. The goal of this project was to create a manually powered kinetic toy that used a simple and intuitive input to generate a visually interesting motion.
I was inspired by the fluid motion of a bird's wing as it flaps, and replicated this organic motion using a linkage system simulated by a 2D Linkage Software. Once the motion of the rotatory hand crank was converted to a desirable flapping motion, it was imported into SolidWorks to build a 3D system. With the help of master modeling, an assembly with these linkages was created and analyzed with a motion study to visualize its motion.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restricted access to fabrication facilities, the project was paused at the design stage.
