Check was a short project, that was used to build CAM and machining skills for both CNC mills and Lathes. I worked in a 5 person team that designed an aluminum, bronze and glass chess set with a total of 53 parts designed and fabricated by us.

In order to produce multiple pieces of each type, the manufacturing process was streamlined. The base profile of each piece was turned on a HAAS TL-1 Lathe. They were then modified further on manual ProtoTRAK mills or the 3-axis HAAS Minimill, with the help of SolidCAM to create asymmetric features. Half of these aluminum bases were anodized black to differentiate between teams. In addition, every piece, other than the pawns, had independently machined bronze inserts.

The board consisted of a glass slab that was sandblasted to create the grid-like pattern needed for the game. The glass was supported by a sleek aluminum base, made from 4 separate sections that were glued together.
